Male Contraceptive Methods: A Comprehensive Review of Current Approaches, Emerging Technologies and Nursing Implications

Abstract

Purpose: This study is designed as a comprehensive literature review of male contraceptive methods, which have evolved in the light of technological advances, and their implications for nursing. Methods: As part of the study, a comprehensive literature search was conducted using keywords in PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science. Findings: The findings indicate that, in addition to vasectomy (tubal ligation), condoms and coitus interruptus (withdrawal) which are the most commonly used methods of male contraception from the past to the present some hormonal and non-hormonal methods of male contraception, developed using advanced technological infrastructure, are currently in use, and new methods are also being developed. Conclusion: While the development and diversification of male contraceptive methods increase men’s responsibility in preventing pregnancy, the role of nurses providing services in this field in delivering accurate information and advice is also significant in this process.
